Four months of the best swimming since, well, high school notched 40 miles from November through February. It was a ton of fun to swim alongside my kids. Got some great pointers from coaches and fellow swimmers (those ten year-old are swim savy!) Wrapped it up with scrimmage with the UNL Swim Club on February [...]

4 Exercise Myths from Dave Fatula – SEPI
Posted: February 2, 2011 by David Kohrell in Strength TrainingTags: Dave Fatula, Exercise Myths, SEPI, Strength Training
Good article by someone I respect – Dave Fatula from SEPI. 4 myths that can hinder longer term gains: Women shouldn’t strength / weight train (no, all people all ages need to build strength – muscles, ligaments, tendons yearn for it) Aerobic only exercise will get ‘er done (no, you’ll find fast declining, diminishing returns [...]

The time over distance, speed/strength over LSD (long slow distance) and intensity of effort over “logging miles” has sunk in deeply now. In looking at January I could feel a few different ways: Down because my running miles were low (67) and almost 1/2 of a year ago. Excited because I had over 300 aerobic [...]

Sometimes what worked in 1904 can work today! Saw this article link posted by Sydney Brown, elite cyclist from Lincoln. 100 years before Tony Horton (P90x), Gregg Glassman (CrossFit founder) or Jillian Michaels – J.P. Muller introduced a body weight only exercise regiment. Based on a quick rotation through swings, pushups, situps, etc for 15 [...]
Incline Sit-ups

With proper form situps on the incline can really accelerate your ab development and cutting. The proper form involves never getting too loose or relaxed on the down and curling up gently on the up. The following video emphasizes this well. Add in some resistance from a friend or weights and you’ll get an extra [...]

The detailed statistics are available in a year end capper. I also shared some candid results in the “Proof Positive [...]
Sit-ups

Google sit-up, situps or sit up and you’ll find the first 20 websites are against the sit-up. Why the hate? The majority of those sites have some product to peddle or magic pill to sell. A few references are good and provide substantive caution regarding sit-ups and crunches. I include a variety of sit-up forms [...]

An ode to pull-ups would not be complete without a nod to Mr. P90x Pull-Up, Tony Horton. This video was captured by Beachbody coaches, Kristin and Pat Hain, before Tony’s Super Saturday event in Lincoln Nebraska in October of 2010. Tony cranks out 20 switch grip pull-up/chin ups (with a slight kipping swing)!
